Vocational Nursing
The Vocational Nursing program consists of the following courses.
Vocational Nursing
1575 Clock Hours/64 Semester Units
Completion: Five Semesters (75 weeks) FT/PT
This program is designed to prepare students for entry levels positions as vocational nurses in all health care settings. Successful completion of the five-semester VN course pattern allows the graduate eligibility to take the state licensing examination, the NCLEX-PN. ELIGIBILITY FOR APPLICATION TO THE VN PROGRAM REQUIRES SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF 5 PREREQUISITE COURSES: GE102 COLLEGE MATH, GE101 ENGLISH COMP & COM., GE103 COMPUTER LITERACY, NS111 ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY, AND MED111 MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY. Complete information regarding program application and admission can be found in the VN Application Handbook. Prior to starting this program, a pre-employment drug screen, physical exam, negative Mantoux intradermal tuberculosis (TB) skin test or Chest X-Ray, and current immunizations are required.
MED111 Medical Terminology
(45 lecture hours/3 semester units)
This is an introductory course in medical terminology with the assumption of no other knowledge in the field. The goal is vocational with a focus on understanding the language of medicine studying basic word structures using a systems approach: Integumentary, musculoskeletal, nervous, cardiovascular, respiratory, reproductive, sensory and endocrine systems will be covered in this course.
NS111 Anatomy and Physiology
(45 lecture hours/3 semester units)
The study of the organic systems of the human body. Topics include the digestive system, the urinary system, the male and female reproductive systems, the nervous system, the cardiovascular system, the respiratory system, the blood, lymphatic and immune systems, the musculoskeletal system, the integumentary system, the endocrine system, and the sense organs.
VN101 Introduction to Client Centered Care
(165 lecture hours-330 lab hours/ 20 semester units)
An introductory course of lecture, skills lab, and clinical rotations, this course allows the opportunity for student to provide physical, intellectual, social-cultural, psychological and spiritual health care to the client. The student will take an active role in assisting the client in health maintenance. Critical thinking concepts are included and all aspects of Fundamentals of Nursing care are addressed.
VN102 Care of the Client with Self-Care Deficits I
(165 lecture hours-330 lab hours/ 19 semester units)
The focus of this course, including lecture, skills lab and clinical rotations, will be the care of the medical/surgical client and utilize a body systems approach. The common deficits, diagnostic exams, medical/surgical management, pathophysiology, pharmacology, nutrition and psychosocial aspects of care are identified. Content also includes nursing care of the client during childbearing and childrearing years.
VN103 Care of the Client with Self-Care Deficits II
(165 lecture hours-330 lab hours/ 19 semester units)
This course will further the students knowledge in the care of the medical/surgical client with more advanced deviations of health. The student will also be introduced to home health care concepts and the client with mental deficits. Theories on leadership and supervision are introduced and followed by a clinical preceptorship.
