Adult Protective Services
Role of Adult Protective Services Agency
Adult Protective Services (APS) is the agency of first response when abuse, neglect, or exploitation of an elder or vulnerable adult is suspected. APS provides assistance to the elderly and adults who are functionally impaired, or who are possible victims of abuse, exploitation or neglect.
Typical types of abuse may include:
- financial abuse, such as unusual banking activity, signatures that do not match on checks or other documents, changes in spending habits.
- emotional abuse, such verbal threats, subjecting an individual to fear or emotional distress, or withholding support or concern.
- physical abuse, such as sexual or physical assault, or inappropriate use of physical or chemical restraint.
- neglect abuse, such as inadequate care, being left alone for extended periods of time, malnourishment or dehydration, or an unclean environment.
Lake College has joined the Adult Protective Services Agency to inform the public regarding drug and medication safety.
For many elders or dependent adults living with family members or others, drugs and medications may be sold or used recreationally without the knowledge of the prescribed user.
There are some signs to look for such as:
- being turned down when attempting to refill a prescription.
- being unable to find medications only to have them "turn up" later.
If you suspect elder abuse, please call 530-225-5798.
